Alpha reading as a service

Alpha readers are the first eyes on a new project. We can give feedback on the overall story, character development, plot holes, and offer some ideas on how to improve readability without losing your voice. Full feedback report and notes in story start at $100 for up to 50,000 words.

Editing as a service

An editor is one of the first people to look at your writing. An editor should be able to help with paragraphing and clarity and will make changes to improve the reader’s experience. Editors work with authors and help them find their voice, style, and cadence. For a novel or longer work, there are several layers of editing that can be involved. Each level has a specific skill set needed to do the best job. I offer developmental editing which takes the alpha reading job to a higher level offering specific ways to clarify, clean up or shape your story. Your style and voice will not be changed; you will be given tools to understand how the reader is interacting with the story and you can choose how to focus on different aspects to bring clarity and keep them engaged. Developmental Editing starts at $0.065/word.

Beta reading as a service

Once your book is finished, a beta reader can help you know what the target audience thinks of your work. Specific feedback can include whether the names of the characters are easy to pronounce, or simply if it grabs the reader’s attention and keeps them involved. This feedback can be a great help to an author because it is from someone who reads books and is from the consumer perspective. Beta reading with full feedback report is $10/10,000 words or part thereof.

Which one?

Many authors want to start with a beta reader and then have the editing and proofreading done at the same time. This is a bit like baking the cake and trying to taste it for a contest at the same time. One has to be done before the other can begin. It would not be suitable for the cook to also be the judge. The best practice is to have a fresh pair of eyes on your project for each step.
